You will not reach the level you anticipate except through persevering with what is displeasing to you.
Allah only elevates those who exert themselves. Allah does not give you “patience”, but places you in situations which allow you to inherit the qualities of patience; Allah does not give you “courage” but places you in situation where you have to act with bravery; and Allah does not give you a “rectified heart” but places you in tribulations that purify you.
Allah says: The Day when neither wealth nor children will be of any benefit, except for the one before Allah with a rectified heart.
How does one exert oneself towards the most valuable of actions of a purified heart? By opposing and striving against the whims of one’s own soul. Allah says: As for the one who fears the station of His Lord and guards his soul against its whims, Paradise will be his repose.
